Ponting retires. A bit. (GNW 14/9/09: 7 Days In 7 Seconds)

Australian captain Ricky Ponting has retired from international Twenty-20 cricket, in a bid to extend his test career. Yes, that’s right – to improve his skills at cricket, he’s going to do much less of it. / going to play it less often.

Australian captain Ricky Ponting has retired from international Twenty-20 cricket, in a bid to extend his test career. Clearly, he thinks that if you really want to get better at something, you should do it much less. / In fact, to get really good at cricket, he may drop it altogether and take up lawn bowls.

He’s now lost the Ashes twice. Remind me not to lend him anything important.

It’s a real sign that the glory days of Australian cricket are over. Not merely that we’ve lost the Ashes twice. More that we’ve still got the captain that lost us the Ashes twice.

The problem is, no-one takes a captain seriously when they’re called Ricky.

Of course, the first time Ponting lost the Ashes, he wasn’t even playing Twenty-20. But I’m sure that’s what’s to blame.

Ponting is hoping keep playing long enough to lead Australia on another UK tour in 2013. The rest of Australia is hoping that we can find someone else to lead us by then.

Actually, I think I’ll retire from Twenty-20 as well, just to get myself ready for the captaincy in 2013. Sure, I may not be much good at playing cricket, but I haven’t lost the Ashes even ONCE.

Ponting said, “Having returned from England with that taste in my mouth, I was keen to give it every possible crack to get back there again.” Yes, well, that’s what happens when you’ve got the taste for crack.

The good news is with Ponting quitting Twenty-20, at least there’s one form of the game we might get some competent captaincy. / inspirational leadership.

Ponting is hoping keep playing long enough to lead Australia on another UK tour in 2013. If we’re still interested in cricket by then.
